2026 tree service price ranges

These are national figures from HomeGuide's 2026 cost guides. Prices in metro Detroit can be higher or lower, and the only real number is a written quote after someone sees your tree.

What pushes the price up

  • Height and trunk width. Bigger trees take longer and need more rigging.
  • What's under it. A tree over a house, deck or pool has to be lowered piece by piece.
  • Access. Backyards with no gate or driveway access often mean climbing and hand-carrying.
  • Condition. Dead and brittle trees, especially ash, are more dangerous to climb.
  • Extras: stump grinding, log removal, root removal, permits.

How to get an accurate quote faster

  • Take a photo of the whole tree from far enough back to see the top.
  • Note what's within reach of it: house, garage, fence, lines.
  • Measure the trunk around at chest height with a tape measure.
  • Know whether a truck can get into the yard and how wide the gate is.

Cost FAQs

Why did I get such different quotes?

Crews price differently based on their equipment, insurance costs and how busy they are. A crew with a crane or bucket truck may be cheaper on a big tree because it's faster and safer. Compare what's included, not just the total.

Is it cheaper to remove a tree in winter?

Some crews have more open schedules in late fall and winter, and frozen ground can make access easier with less lawn damage. Ask whether off-season scheduling changes the price.

Should I pay a deposit?

Small deposits for big jobs aren't unusual, but be careful paying large amounts in cash before work starts, especially to door-to-door crews after storms.
